Kevin Nealon is 'Whelmed' in new standup special

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Kevin Nealon comes across as a mellow guy, which makes the title of his new Showtime comedy special a proper fit.

"Kevin Nealon: Whelmed But Not Overly," debuting 10:30 p.m EDT Saturday, is the actor-comedian's examination of his phobias that range from inoculations to cell phones to chimpanzees.

"It's things I'm not overwhelmed with, just contemplating," Nealon said.

For instance, he said, the "whole flu shot thing."

"Nowadays it seems like anybody can give you a flu shot. You don't know if they're ex-junkies," he said. His advice: "If they wrap a belt around your arm, get out of there."

The stand-up special, taped in February in Denver, is Nealon's second for Showtime. He also plays errant politician and family man Doug Wilson on "Weeds," the drug comedy that stars Mary-Louise Parker and ends its eight-season run Sept. 16.

"It's always bittersweet to say goodbye," Nealon said. "But we all had a pretty good run. ... When something ends you hope you don't get too depressed about it but look forward and be optimistic about what's ahead."

For the former "Saturday Night Live" cast member, that includes challenging himself.

"About two years ago, I woke up and said I'd like to live outside my comfort range," Nealon said. That led him to guest on the politically and socially daring "Real Time with Bill Maher" on HBO.

"For me it was a thrill I don't get doing a lot of other talk shows because they're more 'safe.' Going on 'Bill Maher' was exciting because it was outside my comfort box," he said.

The other test was Howard Stern's radio show.

"I knew his interviewing format and he likes you to talk about other people, which I don't like to do. But he caught me by surprise," proving both respectful and a sharp interviewer, Nealon said.

"I think he's underrated as one of the best comedians of our generation," he said of the shock jock.

Nealon also puts his energies into helping animals, including taping a public service announcement for a no-kill initiative for Los Angeles animal shelters.

Has he adopted a pet for his 5-year-old son, Gable?

"He just got five caterpillars. All rescues," Nealon said.

Financial Tips For Students Going Off to College | Connecticut ...

It is almost time for high school graduates to go off to college, moving away home for the first time. As parents give last-minute lessons about independence, money management should be an important part of these discussions.

It is critical that your student knows about budgeting money, staying out of debt and building a good credit score. This is also the time to talk with your student about the payment plan for college tuition. College loans have become a major burden for millions of Americans, dragging students deep into debt before they even get started in the workplace. College students in the class of 2010 who took out loans to fund their college education owed an average of $25,250, according to a report from the Institute of College Access and Success.

Getting Started
Parents should make a money management plan with their student. The plan should include how and when you will send money as well as how your student will pay the bills. Before they leave the home, decide who will pay for the entertainment and incidental expenses. Go over the basics of a checking account: making a deposit, writing a check, checking the available balance, using a debit card, balancing a checkbook, overdrafts, bounced checks and insufficient funds.

Payment Options for Students Under 21
* Credit cards. A student under the age of 21 can get a credit card if he or she has a co-signer, or has proof of enough income to make payments. Co-signing should only be an option if your student can use a credit card responsibly.?If the student makes a late payment, it also shows up on the?co-signer?s credit report. A parent should make it very clear that the?student?can damage the parent?s credit score if he or she?does not pay the credit card bill. If the student can?t pay off the debt, the co-signer is responsible for the entire debt.

Before getting your student a credit card, parents should pull out your own credit card statement and use it to teach your student about the dangers of paying with plastic. Start with the interest rate and show how much more a purchase will cost if it is not completely paid off at the end of the month and interest is charged. Show how long it will take to pay off a balance if you only make the minimum payment. Point out where to look for the due date and the consequences of a late payment (including late fee, penalty rate and a lower credit score). Warn about the high interest rate and fees for cash advances. Show them how to set up payment reminders. Explain that the credit limit is not a spending limit?if you must carry a balance, keep it below 30% of the credit limit. Use your own struggles and mistakes as lessons and warnings for your children. Teach them about the consequences of missed payments, or just paying the minimum payment.

Some payments should not be made with a credit card. If you carry a balance, do not charge food, clothing, entertainment and other non-emergency items. It is foolish to pay high interest rates on pizza and clothes purchases.

Before applying for any credit card, make them understand the importance of paying off the entire balance on time each month and create that good habit by the first bill. If they can?t afford a payment with cash, they can?t afford it with a credit card.

* Debit Cards. These cards are tied to checking accounts and are easy to obtain if you have an account. However, debit cards do not help build credit scores and they may not provide enough cash during an emergency. Online account alerts can notify you when the account falls below a specified balance. Fees are increasing for checking accounts and debit cards so teach your student about ATM fees, insufficient funds fees and overdraft fees.

* Prepaid cards. Banks and credit card issuers have enthusiastically jumped into the prepaid market because there are fewer regulations and a wide variety of fees. Some prepaid cards are now presented as alternatives to checking accounts with direct deposit, bill payment and ATM withdrawal. Prepaid cards don?t charge interest rates, but the fees can quickly erode the value of the card. Good options are the American Express Prepaid Card and Chase Liquid because they have fewer fees than most prepaid cards.

* Secured Cards. Secured cards are relatively easy for anyone to get because they are secured by a prepaid deposit. They also have many fees and high interest rates so compare the terms and conditions before applying. A secured card can help build your credit score if it reports to a credit agency. However, some cards don?t report to credit agencies, so call the issuer to verify. Secured cards from Orchard Bank and Public Savings Bank both report to credit agencies.

Credit Scores
Teach your student that credit scores are almost as important as test scores. These records start early, so the mistakes they make today will still be on their credit report years from now. Show them a copy of your own credit report and explain how much creditors know about you?everything from late payments on rent to the available balance on a credit card. Landlords,
insurance agents and employers will use credit scores for judgments, interest rates and job offers.

College Loans
The cost of college is expensive and overwhelming. It is much easier to enroll today and worry about payment tomorrow. Since your student will be responsible for the student loan, this is the time share the overall tuition numbers and be clear about how long it will take to pay it off. The traditional repayment period for student loans is 10 years; however, payments can be stretched out to 20 or even 30 years with a greater amount of interest penalties.

Brain imaging can predict how intelligent you are: 'Global brain connectivity' explains 10 percent of variance in individual intelligence

ScienceDaily (Aug. 1, 2012) ? When it comes to intelligence, what factors distinguish the brains of exceptionally smart humans from those of average humans?

As science has long suspected, overall brain size matters somewhat, accounting for about 6.7 percent of individual variation in intelligence. More recent research has pinpointed the brain's lateral prefrontal cortex, a region just behind the temple, as a critical hub for high-level mental processing, with activity levels there predicting another 5 percent of variation in individual intelligence.

Now, new research from Washington University in St. Louis suggests that another 10 percent of individual differences in intelligence can be explained by the strength of neural pathways connecting the left lateral prefrontal cortex to the rest of the brain.

Published in the Journal of Neuroscience, the findings establish "global brain connectivity" as a new approach for understanding human intelligence.

"Our research shows that connectivity with a particular part of the prefrontal cortex can predict how intelligent someone is," suggests lead author Michael W. Cole, PhD, a postdoctoral research fellow in cognitive neuroscience at Washington University.

The study is the first to provide compelling evidence that neural connections between the lateral prefrontal cortex and the rest of the brain make a unique and powerful contribution to the cognitive processing underlying human intelligence, says Cole, whose research focuses on discovering the cognitive and neural mechanisms that make human behavior uniquely flexible and intelligent.

"This study suggests that part of what it means to be intelligent is having a lateral prefrontal cortex that does its job well; and part of what that means is that it can effectively communicate with the rest of the brain," says study co-author Todd Braver, PhD, professor of psychology in Arts & Sciences and of neuroscience and radiology in the School of Medicine. Braver is a co-director of the Cognitive Control and Psychopathology Lab at Washington University, in which the research was conducted.

One possible explanation of the findings, the research team suggests, is that the lateral prefrontal region is a "flexible hub" that uses its extensive brain-wide connectivity to monitor and influence other brain regions in a goal-directed manner.

"There is evidence that the lateral prefrontal cortex is the brain region that 'remembers' (maintains) the goals and instructions that help you keep doing what is needed when you're working on a task," Cole says. "So it makes sense that having this region communicating effectively with other regions (the 'perceivers' and 'doers' of the brain) would help you to accomplish tasks intelligently."

While other regions of the brain make their own special contribution to cognitive processing, it is the lateral prefrontal cortex that helps coordinate these processes and maintain focus on the task at hand, in much the same way that the conductor of a symphony monitors and tweaks the real-time performance of an orchestra.

"We're suggesting that the lateral prefrontal cortex functions like a feedback control system that is used often in engineering, that it helps implement cognitive control (which supports fluid intelligence), and that it doesn't do this alone," Cole says.

The findings are based on an analysis of functional magnetic resonance brain images captured as study participants rested passively and also when they were engaged in a series of mentally challenging tasks associated with fluid intelligence, such as indicating whether a currently displayed image was the same as one displayed three images ago.

Previous findings relating lateral prefrontal cortex activity to challenging task performance were supported. Connectivity was then assessed while participants rested, and their performance on additional tests of fluid intelligence and cognitive control collected outside the brain scanner was associated with the estimated connectivity.

Results indicate that levels of global brain connectivity with a part of the left lateral prefrontal cortex serve as a strong predictor of both fluid intelligence and cognitive control abilities.

Although much remains to be learned about how these neural connections contribute to fluid intelligence, new models of brain function suggested by this research could have important implications for the future understanding -- and perhaps augmentation -- of human intelligence.

The findings also may offer new avenues for understanding how breakdowns in global brain connectivity contribute to the profound cognitive control deficits seen in schizophrenia and other mental illnesses, Cole suggests.

Other co-authors include Tal Yarkoni, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado at Boulder; Grega Repovs, PhD, professor of psychology at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia; and Alan Anticevic, an associate research scientist in psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine.

Funding from the National Institute of Mental Health supported the study (National Institutes of Health grants MH66088, NR012081, MH66078, MH66078-06A1W1, and 1K99MH096801).
