Chandler: Everything the Bundesliga wanted to know about sex...

Which basic desires motivate us toward greatness on the athletic field? If you answered ?Ice cream and sex,? then Rex Ryan welcomes you to the Jets. If you just answered ?sex,? then you are Derek Jeter. If you?ve already forgotten the question, would you be interested in writing a guest column for this blog? You seem like Out of Bounds material.

But it may surprise you that athletes actually have 16 basic human desires, or so contends Ohio State psychologist Steven Reiss, who developed the Reiss motivation profile. That?s what one that German Bundesliga League soccer team Hanover is using this year to help coach Mirko Slomka ?familiarize? himself with his players. The fun part is that the Reiss motivation profile seems to be full of questions about sex. And not just basic questions ? it really wants to know what gets your freak on. Sample statements on the Reiss profile are:

?I am what you could call sexually unrestrained.?

?I want any sex I can get.?

?I have a lot of erotic fantasies.?

source: Players evaluate each statement on a scale of -3 to +3, and a team of psychologists then determine what makes them tick.

Smoke coming from laptop, which begins to wobble and shoot sparks.

PSYCHOLOGIST 1: ?You fool! I told you not to run Dennis Rodman?s profile!?

PSYCHOLOGIST 2: ?AiiEE! It?s in flames!?

PSYCHOLOGIST 1 (grabs fire extinguisher): ?Run! Save yourselves!?

Coach Slomka, according to the Guardian UK, said that he had already completed the 128 survey questions, and that the players were free to see his responses if they wanted. (Form an orderly line!) Slomka to Bild magazine: ?With this test I know how I can best reach each player.?

Yes, by phone, if I?m any judge of male pro athletes.

But Hanover is all in with this experiment, and has even hired a ?motivation consultant,? Peter Boltersdorf.

?Each player needs different conditions to perform at his best over a long period,? Boltersdorf said. ?This is what I have to look into. Every player should have the feeling that his individuality is being considered.?

The Guardian didn?t list them, but I looked around and found that Reiss? 16 basic human desires are: power, independence, curiosity, acceptance, order, saving, honor, idealism, social contact, family, status, vengeance, romance, eating, physical exercise, and tranquility. From Ohio State Research Communications:

?These desires are what drive our everyday actions and make us who we are,? Reiss said. ?What makes individuals unique is the combination and ranking of these desires.?

Reiss said at least 14 of the 16 basic desires seem to have a genetic basis. Only the desires for idealism and acceptance don?t appear to have a genetic component. ?Most of these desires are similar to those seen in animals, and seem to have some survival value,? Reiss said. ?This indicates they are genetic in origin.?

Is this part of what makes Tim Tebow unique? He could have elevated levels of idealism and order, and low amounts of vengeance and romance. If other NFL teams had used the Reiss survey prior to the draft, someone else might be riding the crest of the Tebow Rainbow right now.

What about Michael Vick? Could the Falcons have avoided a major headache with some pre-hand Reiss knowledge? Should the Colts send the sex questions to Andrew Luck? (?You dropped to the second round? What kind of freaky things are you into, Luck? You said the goat was just a pet!?).

Look, I know of few U.S. athletes who would answer this survey truthfully, or even take the time to fill it out (Hanover isn?t making it mandatory). Plus, who wants to examine the answers to hundreds of creepy sex questions? Well OK, Deadspin, but who else?

At any rate, look for far fewer contact fouls and red cards in the Bundesliga this season. No one is going to want to come within six yards of anyone else.

And in the 2014 World Cup final, Paul the Psychic Octopus chooses ? the missionary position?

Explosion kills 2 Shiite pilgrims south of Baghdad (AP)

BAGHDAD ? Iraqi officials say a roadside bomb has killed two Shiite pilgrims and wounded 10 others south of Baghdad.

Police and health officials say Monday's blast targeted pilgrims walking to the holy Shiite city of Karbala to commemorate the end of 40 days of mourning following the anniversary of the death of Imam Hussein, a revered Shiite figure.

The attack took place in the Baghdad suburb of Awairij.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief media.

Bombings targeting members of Iraq's Shiite Muslim majority have been on the rise during the past days. The attacks are believed to be the work of Sunni insurgents.

2012 NFL Mock Draft: New York Giants Projected To Select Zach Brown

The New York Giants are projected to select North Carolina outside linebacker Zach Brown in the 2012 NFL Draft, according to SB Nation's 2012 NFL Mock Draft.

Brown managed 105 tackles, 5.5 sacks and three interceptions as a senior at North Carolina, helping the Tar Heels to a 7-6 record and a spot in the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl. He is widely seen as one of the top outside linebacker prospects in the draft, and could help solidify the already-stout Giants defense.

It's hard to think of the Giants' run defense playing better than they did against Atlanta this weekend, but Brown would make that unit truly elite. The UNC product is the best 4-3 outside linebacker in the draft, a natural fit on the weakside where he can use his range and instincts to shut down plays.

Razer Blade spotted at CES 2012, now rocking SSD and functional trackpad (video)

Back in September, we got our hands on the 17-inch gaming behemoth from Razer. There was only one snag: the trackpad wasn't fully functional yet. There were screens in place, but we weren't able to test out all of the controls. Here at CES, we were able to get a quick hands-on with a final consumer model, ready to start dominating your next Skyrim marathon. As you may recall, the trackpad is offset to the right side of the keyboard so as not to interfere with your access to the essential in-game controls. Serving up quite a few functions, the tech includes a miniature web browser, access to control settings, macro key set-up, YouTube viewer, a number pad and a regular ol' laptop touchpad. Another difference between the model pictured here and the one we spent some time with is the inclusion of a 256GB SSD instead of a 320GB HDD which pushed the launch date back to mid January. The kit will still set you back $2,799 and is slated to ship later this month.

Color location-based photo sharing app makes a big splash on iPhone and Android

Just when Instagram had reached the peak of trendiness, along comes the next big thing in mobile photo-sharing: Color. Color is an iPhone/Android app that lets you share location-tagged photos. What?s new about Color is the way it builds your contacts: it shows you photos from people who are currently within 100 feet of you, whether you know them or not.

If you?re around someone all the time, Color will figure out that you know that person, and start showing you more of their photos. Meanwhile, photos from the strangers who move in and out of your life will disappear as quickly as the people themselves. This ?elastic? social network is supposed to encourage people to say hi to one another, while keeping the photos relevant by showing your current location.

It?s an interesting play with a ton of money behind it ? the color.com domain name alone cost the startup $350,000. It?s also got a big name attached: Bill Nguyen, who also founded Lala.com and sold it to Apple. Whether users are comfortable with this new, very public way of sharing photos will determine whether Color?s future is bright. If it doesn?t work on its own, we?re sure the technology would be an attractive buy for a company like Facebook which thrives on creatively pushing the bounds of privacy.

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio might be just the ticket for vice president

WASHINGTON?

?

Here's a question that's being raised none too soon: Whom will Mitt Romney select as his running mate?

Several names have been suggested, including Condoleezza Rice and Sen. Rob Portman, of Ohio. Rice's interest isn't clear and Portman, despite his personal qualities and swing-state bona fides, would merely add a snooze button to Romney's campaign.

Latest to the list is the young and junior senator from Florida, Marco Rubio. His political resume: nine years as a state legislator, including two as speaker of the Florida House; enormous popularity with tea partiers who sent him to the U.S. Senate over Republican Gov. Charlie Crist; a Cuban heritage and, thus, his presumed appeal to Hispanic voters; he's young at just 40 and, it never hurts, attractive.

Add to the above that Florida is a crucial swing state, the population of which is 22.5 percent Hispanic.

No one is ever perfect, of course, and Rubio critics will cite his chronologically challenged rendition of his parents' exile from Cuba. Rubio claimed that they were driven out by Fidel Castro when, in fact, they left Cuba before Castro took over the island nation. Rubio later explained that the date, though incorrect, didn't diminish the family's experience of exile when, upon Castro's rise to power, they didn't feel they could return to Cuba.

For Cubans who had to leave their homeland with empty pockets and broken hearts, their homes ravaged and their belongings confiscated by revolutionary rebels, Rubio's exaggeration no doubt stung. But fatal for Rubio? Not likely. It is possible to imagine that growing up in south Florida, where Spanish is a first language and displacement is the Cuban community's core identity, Rubio can be understood to have embraced the larger cultural narrative as his own. As he put it in an editorial for Politico, "I am the son of exiles. I inherited two generations of unfulfilled dreams. This is a story that needs no embellishing."

Of perhaps greater value to Democrats is Rubio's attractiveness to tea partiers. Thanks to media portraits of tea party members as tantrum-throwing ignoramuses with racist tendencies, the argument would be that Rubio can't appeal to a broader spectrum of voters. This argument has some merit, but only if you haven't heard Rubio speak or paid attention to his message. Rubio isn't just a poster boy for the shrink-government contingent. Much like Barack Obama, he's a monument to the American Dream. Like Obama, he speaks often about the privilege of being an American and of possessing a birthright that allows the son of a bartender and a maid to become a U.S. senator. Only in America.

But unlike Obama, Rubio condemns rhetoric that seeks to divide the American people against each other. He shuns the idea that some are worse off because others are doing better. In a year-end address to the Senate about his first year in office, Rubio articulated a conservative road map that is equal parts tough love and compassion and that combines the conservatism of Ronald Reagan with the conciliatory charm of Bill Clinton. He is a human composite of sunny optimism and urgent realism. If it wasn't a stump speech, it should be.

Saying we're not a nation of haves and have-nots, but a nation of haves and soon-to-haves, Rubio pointed out three obstacles to prosperity: a "crazy" tax code, complicated regulations that kill small businesses, and a national debt that exceeds the economy.

Obama inherited a bad economy, Rubio conceded, but, mathematically speaking, the country now is in worse shape with higher debt, unemployment and poverty. Rubio said that clearing these obstacles and creating a realistic plan to reduce the debt and deficit would lead to greater prosperity, which would lead to more jobs, which would mean more taxpayers and therefore more revenue for, among other things, Medicare funding and infrastructure repairs.

You won't find a Republican who doesn't agree with this assessment, but you also won't find any who can deliver the argument with greater passion or less-divisive rhetoric. This is the Rubio that Democrats should fear, and to whom Romney no doubt is well attuned.

Apple to hold media event at the end of January? (Digital Trends)

AppleWallpaperAccording to a report by AllThingsD.com, Apple has already planned its first event of 2012, and it has been scheduled for the end of January. However, before you rush to put your iPad 2 on eBay, it?s unlikely to herald the arrival of the iPad 3, or in fact, any new hardware.

As with most rumors surrounding Apple, the story is attributed to chatty ?sources close to the situation,? and they?re describing the gathering as ?media-related.? It?s also said to take place in New York, rather than the San Francisco or Cupertino locations usually used to take the covers off a new product.

Apple?s Senior VP of Internet Software and Services, Eddy Cue, is expected to be present. He was last seen on stage describing iCloud in June, and before that he took questions alongside the team responsible for the iPad-only newspaper, The Daily, at the beginning of 2011.

Mr. Cue?s background is in the creation of both the App Store and the iTunes Music store, and he has also recently been working with Apple?s iAd division, which is?apparently waiting to have a new vice president appointed.

So, none of this points to the launch of the iPad 3, nor the rumored Apple television, or some currently unheard of product. Instead, it seems logical to expect a software-related announcement.

It?s all speculation at the moment, but if Apple does have an event set for January it shouldn?t be long before the invitations start to appear, at which time we could see some clues to its content.
