Tortured Afghan girl to be treated in India

Updated January 03, 2012 08:23:48

An Afghan child bride who says she was tortured by her mother-in-law and locked in a toilet for six months will be sent to India for medical treatment, the government in Kabul said on Monday.

Sahar Gul, 15, was beaten, had her fingernails pulled out and was burned with cigarettes after she defied her in-laws who tried to force her into prostitution. She was left barely able to speak after her ordeal.

The girl, who was found in the basement of her husband's house in the north-east Baghlan province late last month, had been sold by her brother to her husband about seven months ago for $5,000.

Her family, from the neighbouring province of Badakhshan, had reported her disappearance to the police after being denied access to the home.

"The government is sending her to India for further treatment. She will be treated for her wounds," Afghan interior ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqui said.

"Her mother-in-law and sister-in-law have been arrested, the police are after her husband and father-in-law who are at large, they will be arrested soon."

Women continue to suffer in Afghanistan despite billions of dollars of international aid which has poured into the country during the decade-long war.

President Hamid Karzai's office said in a statement that the interior ministry had launched an investigation into the "tortures and violence against Sahar Gul".

"The president, in raising this issue to the national security council meeting, assigned the deputy interior minister to arrest the culprits as soon as possible and bring them to justice", the statement said.

The teenager had previously told Afghan health minister Dr Suraya Dalil from a hospital bed in Kabul, "for several months I was locked up in toilet by my in-laws and particularly my mother-in-law".

"I was denied food and water. I was tortured and beaten," she said.

The Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission logged 1,026 cases of violence against women in the second quarter of 2011 compared with 2,700 cases for the whole of 2010.

And according to figures in an Oxfam report in October, 87 per cent of Afghan women report having experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence or forced marriage.

PFT: 'I'm not a loser,' Rex says after elimination

B. Polian T. DungyGetty Images

It was a busy Black Monday, as expected. ?The moment we?ll remember years from now is when we learned Colts owner Jim Irsay decided to pull the plug on the Polian era in Indianapolis.

Peyton Manning was among those most surprised.

?I was stunned, I was surprised, I was saddened and just disappointed that it all happened this way,? Manning told ESPN.com?s Chris Mortensen. ?I was actually meeting with Bill [Polian] in the training room and we were talking about my rehab schedule, what I could and couldn?t do in the facility under the new [CBA] and my checkpoints when he was summoned to see Irsay. He actually chuckled and said, ?We?ll see.? ?

There were indications over the last few months that Manning and Polian were not on the same page with certain aspects of Manning?s rehab. That didn?t change the affection Manning had for Polian after everything they accomplished together.

?Bill and I and Chris Polian has been here the whole time, too, had a great ride with tremendous highs and it makes me very sad that this ends on such a negative note,? said Manning.

Polians departure doesn?t mean that Manning is next out the door. In fact, we believe Irsay?s decision makes it more likely that Manning stays.

Tony Dungy joined NBC SportsTalk Monday and was stunned as well. Florio asked Dungy if Polian?s departure would affect whether Manning wanted to stay with the Colts.

?I don?t think so,? Dungy said. ?With what I know, with everyone there, Peyton Manning wants to be a Colt. He wants to finish his career there. Jim Irsay wants him to finish his career there. I don?t think [Polian's departure] will be a factor at all.?

Bachmann, Perry plan to head south after Iowa vote (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Rick Perry and Michele Bachmann plan to make their next ? and possibly last ? stands in South Carolina instead of chasing the rest of the GOP presidential pack to New Hampshire.

Neither candidate is a sure bet to survive past Tuesday's leadoff Iowa caucuses. But both say they'll jump ahead to the first Southern state to vote, a recognition that they have little hope of making up ground in the nine days before New Hampshire's primary. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is heavily favored in his neighboring state, but a few others are in pursuit.

Perry, the Texas governor, heads straight to Greenville, S.C. on Wednesday. Bachmann, a Minnesota congresswoman, will spend part of three days in that state beginning Wednesday, her campaign manager said.

The two campaigns could face pressure to fold if they don't pull off surprising third-place-or-better finishes in Iowa. In Bachmann's case, the latest polling has her in last place among the six candidates campaigning hard.

For the last week, Bachmann has pushed back on daily questions about her ability to move on if she can't climb out of the basement in Iowa, the state where she was born.

"Well, we've bought tickets to head off to South Carolina," she said Sunday on ABC's "This Week." She has a South Carolina staff of at least a dozen and backing from influential tea party activists there.

Asked this weekend if he could conceive of a scenario where she drops out ahead of South Carolina, Bachmann campaign manager Keith Nahigian told The Associated Press, "Not at this point."

Nahigian said Bachmann doesn't intend to arrive in New Hampshire until Friday ahead of back-to-back weekend debates there. Perry also plans to participate in those debates.

Bachmann has invested little time in New Hampshire in the six months she's been in the race. In October, five full-time staff members for her there quit.

Perry is also a footnote in most New Hampshire polls and hasn't devoted much effort to the state lately.

Romney is far ahead of his rivals in New Hampshire. But former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman practically moved into a state where independents can vote, bypassing an Iowa contest where social conservatives tend to hold sway. Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich also plan to aggressively compete in New Hampshire.

"I think New Hampshire is a good place to start the debate for South Carolina," Gingrich said Sunday.

7 Best Health Quotes of the Year (LiveScience.com)

We get a chance to speak with a lot of medical experts. Many of the things they say make us think, laugh, or do a double-take. (What did he just say?!) Here's our list of the top seven things doctors and researchers said to us in 2011:

"If a hot toddy makes you feel better, go for it."

?? Dr. Alan Weiss, internal medicine physician at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Weiss made the comment as he explained that, while a "hot toddy" cocktail won't cure the flu as folklore might suggest, the alcohol content and steam from the drink might relieve some symptoms of the illness.

"People are afraid to step on the scale, but they do have to put their pants on every day."

?? Dr. Michael Jenson, endocrinologist from Mayo Clinic. Weiss was explaining that waist size may be a good way for the average person to monitor his or her health.

"Mother Nature is a pretty good bioterrorist."

?? Jonathan Tucker, chemical and biological weapons expert at the Monterey Institute of International Studies' Center for Nonproliferation Studies, in Washington, D.C. Tucker was referring to the fact that microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses don't need the help of a human bioterrorist to cause a global pandemic. They can evolve into more deadly strains on their own.

"In the food safety world, we say: 'Don't eat poop.' But if you're going to, make sure it's cooked."

?? Douglas Powell, a professor of food safety at Kansas State University, when we interviewed him about unverified claims that Japanese researchers had turned human excrement into edible meat.

"This is the one transplant that can have a 300 percent mortality rate."

?? Dr. Andreas Tzakis, professor and director of the transplant program at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Tzakis was noting how much will be at stake in an operation in which a mother donates her uterus to her daughter, referring to the lives of the mother, the daughter, and the baby who could later inhabit the womb.

"I don?t think your gums are related to your penis in any reasonable way."

? Dr. Andrew Kramer, surgeon and erectile dysfunction expert at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Kramer was expressing his doubts about a causal link behind the findings of a study showing an association between periodontitis, an inflammation or infection of the gums, and erectile dysfunction.

"I don?t care if what we do makes a profit; I care whether we get somebody out of a wheelchair."

? Mark Noble, director of the Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Institute at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) School of Medicine. Noble made the comment when discussing the decision of the biotechnology company Geron to cancel its government-approved trial designed to test an embryonic stem cell therapy in people. Nobel said the decision may indicate the perilous nature of medical research funded by corporations.
