Your iPhone warranty won't cover the damage this soup bowl stand may cause

6 hrs.

Look, we've all thoughtlessly put our iPhones into dangerous situations ? on the edge of a sink, right next to a kleptomaniac monkey, on the roof of a moving car, and so on ? ?and had the little gadgets live to tell their tales. But these?strokes of luck are no reason to suddenly start using a modified soup bowl as an iPhone stand.

Daisuke Nagatomo, a partner at design firm MisoSoupDesign, told NBC News that people are so obsessed with their smartphones, that they don't want to put them down, "even while eating." It's their way of staying connected with the world and avoiding feeling lonely.

Nagatomo suggests picturing a guy eating at a restaurant, alone, with chopsticks in one hand and a cellphone in the other. "For some people, that is absolutely the most normal thing to do." But there's one problem, Nagatomo explains: The fella in our example basically needs a third hand to eat properly.

That's why MisoSoupDesign has created the "Anti-Loneliness Ramen Bowl," a bowl which doubles as an iPhone stand, so that you can eat properly while using your iPhone. Yes, there's some tongue-in-cheek silliness to the whole thing, and it doesn't sound like Nagatomo is genuinely suggesting keeping your iPhone on the edge of a soup-filled bowl?? but MisoSoupDesign intends to produce the strange dish anyway.

"The bowl is almost ready for production in the factory," Nagatomo says. "We are aiming mid-April to May for some limited edition bowl distribution through our website, and also in Asia."

There are no details on pricing just yet. ?It might be wise to look into a good iPhone protection plan which covers water ??or soup?? damage while waiting for those to be announced.

Should You Outsource the Management of the Fleet? - Business ...

Provided by?Expense Reduction Analysts

On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate the current effectiveness of running your fleet of vehicles? For most companies, fleet management is in the top 5 of costs for running their business, and in most cases, [is] number 3.

A company with 30 vehicles has a million dollar investment in its car park. This is an investment that will normally lose 50% of its value over a 3-year period. On top of that, there are maintenance and operating costs to consider.

Company fleets are often made up of vehicles that may be a ?tool of trade?, salaried vehicles provided as part of a remuneration package, or employee-owned vehicles occasionally used for company purposes (grey fleets). Company leases are arranged between the company and vehicle supplier, whilst novated leases are a 3-way arrangement between the employer, employee and vehicle supplier.

A Principal Consultant at Expense Reduction Analysts, Tom Debney, recommends that after the initial financial burden of sourcing a fleet of vehicles through purchase or leasing, the next consideration are the costs of running the fleet. ?In recent years, the cost of fuel has been steadily increasing, becoming one of the major areas of financial impact. The price of fuel is dependent on many external factors; therefore companies must investigate internal controls to ensure that the provision of fuel is cost effective,? Tom says.

Maintenance is another area where fleet managers should ensure that vehicle servicing is being performed to specifications and that [the] rates being charged are market competitive.

Twenty years ago, 6 cylinder fleets were serviced twice a year, proving to be an expensive proposition. Drivers knew how to check the oil and fluids and did it if they wanted their vehicle to be reliable. In today?s sophisticated market with computer chips and electronics, the dipstick is hard to find, and many young drivers have never been shown. Changing a tyre is complex for them and there may not be a spare. Maintenance and regular service is an O.H.&S. risk and needs to take place in accordance with the maintenance schedule issued by the OEM.?

With the increasing importance of OH&S in all Australian states, the company holds an OH&S responsibility to protect the company drivers, by ensuring the fleet is adequately maintained at all times. This extends to the ?grey fleet? and so just maintaining the records to check vehicles are serviced and safe can be complex. Managing fleet is about managing risk. Motor vehicle policy needs to be reviewed and updated and cover areas such as driver fatigue, use of mobile phones, engagement of learner drivers and alcohol abstinence to mention just a few.

Should you outsource the management of the fleet? Another Principal Consultant at ERA, Brett Hay affirms that many companies choose to outsource fleet management, as it can be a complex and time-consuming task. ?Outsourcing fleet management provides access to both economies of scale and industry expertise. However, it is critical to conduct regular reviews to ensure you are receiving the best possible solution and price,? Brett advises.

Sourcing the cheapest option is not always the right solution as any savings can quickly be offset by incurring higher maintenance and service costs. The key is to manage the fleet by considering the full cost of the investment over the term of the investment. Once vehicles become older the risk of exposure to higher repair costs increases. One size usually does not fit all and it is important to consistently select the most cost effective solution for each specific application. This may be by varying the length of the lease or the maximum kms. The customising of the arrangement? can prove to be very emotive in managing salary packaging, with choice of 4 cylinder versus 6 cylinder, vehicle type (e.g. SUV, etc.) being important points to manage with the driver.

'Brutally Cold' Weather Could Strengthen Pond Ice - in Framingham ...

If you haven't noticed yet, it's cold outside, very cold. For some people however, the cold is a good sign.

Many types of outdoor sports require strong, safe ice. There's pond hockey, ice fishing and some snowmobile trails that cross ponds.

Last week, fire departments across the region were saying they would not recommend going out on the ice. Many departments refrain from saying the ice is safe to err on the side of caution.

"Based on my training and experience, the only 'safe' ice is that of an indoor rink," Holliston Fire Chief Michael Cassidy said.

However, for residents that are willing to take the risk on ice safety, the cold weather is great for their morale.

"It is likely that some back yard temperatures in the usual cold spots could be in the range from 5 to 10 below zero," Jim Arnold, weather specialist with the Shrewsbury Emergency Management Agency, said.

Here are some local favorites for residents that like to hit the ice.

Later in the winter, when ice is hopefully stronger and safer, some popular skating spots include:

Using real-world evidence to support medical communications ...

Posted 21st January 2013 in Articles | Register to comment

Sally Bull and Andy Turner

Complete True Life

When planning a medical communications strategy, Sally Bull and Andy Turner discuss the importance of including real-world evidence-based research in order to support value demonstration in the development of pharmaceutical products.

Real-world observational patient studies are becoming a necessity to support value demonstration in the development of pharmaceutical products, both to validate early marketing insights and to support evidence-based health economic arguments as part of the reimbursement process.

We believe that real-world observational patient studies need to be embraced within medical communications planning to provide clear and relevant messages to all key stakeholders ? health-care professionals, patients, payers and governments.

The role of medical communications

A medical communications agency will work closely with a pharmaceutical brand team to ensure all the relevant data that supports the product reaches the target audiences in a clear and consistent way, using a wide range of media. This includes, but is not exclusive to, journal articles, congress posters, learning resources, scientific slide kits, animations, materials for sales representatives, and media materials to support PR. Digital communication tools, such as social media initiatives, are also employed in communicating the brand story, and are becoming an increasingly important resource in the brand teams? communication tool kit.

?

?There is now, however, an increasing requirement from stakeholders to evaluate the effectiveness of medicines when used in routine clinical practice??

?

The core principle of medical communications is to use these different channels to educate and inform a wide variety of stakeholders about the risks and benefits of new therapies. This has historically been supported by the use of clinical data from Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) which provides evidence on efficacy and safety for healthcare interventions.

The rise of real-world studies

There is now, however, an increasing requirement from stakeholders to evaluate the effectiveness of medicines when used in routine clinical practice by conducting real-world observational patient studies.

By conducting a real-world study, additional information is made available to understand patient populations, patient sub-groups, health resource use, cost effectiveness / utility arguments and patient reported outcomes. This all needs to be clearly packaged and communicated in alignment with the clinical data to support the best chances for successful reimbursement.

The patient as a key stakeholder

An increasingly important element of this communication is now centring on the patient as a key stakeholder.

Understanding the patient journey in relation to the management of a condition over time is a central requirement. Key questions that can be asked in a real-world observational study to help support this are:

? What type of treatment does the patient receive?

? What influence does the patient have over treatment decisions?

? Which health care professionals has the patient seen on the journey and at which stage?

? How long has a diagnosis taken?

? How long after the diagnosis was a medication prescribed?

? What switching patterns occur and at what decision points are these switches taking place?

Real-world studies provide an opportunity to hear the patient voice by recording information from the physician on presenting patients and then matching it with data collected directly from the patient.

?

?Real-world studies provide an opportunity to hear the patient voice??

?

Data collected directly from the patient can incorporate validated Patient Reported Outcomes (PRO) measures to gain a robust understanding of specific areas relating to their condition, including Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), severity, symptoms, and functionality.

Understanding routine clinical practice for insights and evidence

Real-world studies open a ?true-to-life? window on what is happening in routine clinical practice and can add to the weight of evidence already provided by the clinical trial programme. This evidence can be gathered either to validate early insights work in the development of establishing brand value or to provide evidence based health outcomes / economic arguments to support the reimbursement process.

Real-world insights

Data from real-world studies can assist in validating hypothesis that have been developed from early insights work to demonstrate what value a new product will need to exhibit in order to maximise the opportunity for market access.

Medical communications companies that can offer a deeper understanding of how to incorporate real-world insights to identify the most appropriate channels for targeting value demonstration, which will ultimately provide enhanced communications for their target audience.

The communication of messages associated with a specific sub- group of the patient population, where the unmet need matches the value proposition for the brand, will have greater success than generating generic messages to the total population.

Real-world evidence

Identification of evidence gaps via real-studies rather than the clinical trial programme can provide additional opportunities for medical communications.

There is an increasing need, particularly from payers, to provide additional publishable real-world evidence which can be included as part of the reimbursement submission.

?

?There is an increasing need, particularly from payers, to provide additional publishable real-world evidence??

?

Evidence that demonstrates the burden of illness within a defined real-world patient population can then be associated with the value of reducing the burden with the selected intervention. By showing this in real clinical practice, the drug is more likely to gain a favourable reimbursement decision.

An understanding of how to utilise real-world studies to support these evidence gaps again provides additional opportunities for enhanced medical communications.

The message is clear; real-world studies are a vital tool in medical communications, and will become increasingly important in the near future as the information they provide is sought by physicians, patients, and payers within the healthcare system.

As part of the medical communications planning process, serious consideration should be made to understand the relevance and need for real-world insights and evidence based research to add value and validity to your recommendations.

News to make you feel good - Lehigh Valley Health Blog

January 21, 2013

Posted by Milton Carrero at 01:13:51 PM on January 21, 2013

Yes, this column is meant to make you feel good.

If you are like most people, you spend a great deal of time feeling stressed and worried. You have earned a moment of joy. In fact, you have earned a day of adventure, a day of surprise.

The first surprise is that you're reading this in the newspaper. All of those times when you have thought: "I wish I could find something in the news that did not make me feel afraid, worried or depressed." Well, today is not one of those days where there is nothing positive in the news.

This is my honest attempt to remind you that life is a privilege. It's what I've seen in many of the people I've interviewed. Jacqui Jarret?came to terms with losing part of her arm in a car accident when she volunteered in Haiti, following its devastating earthquake in 2010. The Bethlehem nutritionist met others who had lost more than one limb, and several family members. They were in the most precarious of circumstances and yet they were grateful for life. Jarret later told me that she had gone to Haiti to help the people, but instead they had helped her to heal.

Ron Moyer, whose son died in a car accident at the age of 20, recently called me to share what he felt when he met the families of those who had received his son's life-saving organs. He and his wife Jenny will always miss their son, but they found joy in giving life to others.

Even in the most limited and predictable of circumstances, there is room for surprise. Easton Physical Therapist Steve Super lost his vision at the peak of his accounting career due to congenital optical disease. He had to rebuild is life. He did, earning his degree in Physical Therapy and starting a family.

Eight years later, Super regained his vision--just before the birth of his first son. It defied all the statistics and probabilities for someone with his condition.

These are some of the countless?Lehigh Valley neighbors who have faced enough adversity to see life as a gift.

PFT: Garrett won't call plays? |? Step forward?

Jerry JonesAP

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is talking to a group of reporters at the Senior Bowl as we speak, and he said he?s taking a bit of authority from head coach Jason Garrett.

According to Calvin Watkins of ESPNDallas.com, Jones said that Garrett would no longer call offensive plays, and that offensive coordinator/line coach Bill Callahan would.

Garrett?s position seemed far from secure already, especially with his brother John leaving his staff to take a lateral move in Tampa Bay.

Coupled with the firing of defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, and interviewing guys such as former Arkansas coach Houston Nutt for unspecified positions, it would be hard for anyone to feel safe for the long-term in Dallas at the moment.
