Using Self-Hypnosis With The Metaphoric Relationship Enhancer

I wrote this article on my wedding anniversary and so was delighted to be writing about using self-hypnosis for enhancing relationships.

Last weekend, my wife and I were dogsitting for a family pet; Mick the dog; a very good looking, incredibly well-behaved 10 year old Border Collie.

We took him out for a couple of very long walks over to our local beach, we went through the wooded area, up to the top of the clifftop, back down the other side onto the pebble beach and all the way back along the beach.

It was at this beach, that Mick decided to initiate the stick throwing and fetching game. He found a stick, a piece of driftwood that he took to. He would trot in front of me, turn back, look at me and plop it on the floor. Then he'd take a couple of steps backwards whilst looking at me, crouching and ready. I would then pick up the soggy, chewed, dribble and sand covered stick and launch it as far as I could and he'd run off to fetch it, bring it back and we'd start all over again.

This went on seemingly tirelessly, though he slept incredibly well in the evenings, I must say. For his early morning and late evening ablution walks around the nearby woods, we'd do a similar game with his ball (which thankfully has a ball throwing gizmo meaning I do not have to pick up his ball with my hands, it is constantly wet and chewed and a worryingly brown colour) and it'd help wear him out some more.

I say all this, like it all went smoothly and simply.

However, all was not as plain as it seems from my initial write-up. Oh no.

Every now and then, Mick did not want to fetch what you'd thrown for him; one evening we got to our back gate and I thought I'd throw the ball for him one more time. In response, he sat by the gate and stared at me as if to say "I have had enough of the ball throwing game, I want to go in, you better go get the ball."

I had to go and get the ball, and I got plenty of exercise on that occasion.

Other times, I thrown the ball or the stick and he'd not go for it, but as soon as I got close to it, he'd dash in with speed and pace and grab it from under my nose and then want to play a sort of "dog-chase" game that usually involved him goading me into a tug-of-war with the ball or stick.

And on other occasions, he'd get the ball if we were going in particular direction, but not in another direction. It all took a lot of flexibility and learning about how best to do things in order to derive the best responses.

Ok, so this is all a little bit tongue-in-cheek and I am unlikely to be championed as Cesar Milan material just yet, but we had a wonderful time with Mick and my relationship with him is something I am using as a metaphor for enhancing relationships with this simple, short and sweet self-hypnosis technique.

Corydon Hammond himself uses a process of a Golden Retriever metaphor for helping people who constantly pursue uncommitted partners and almost begs them for love, so I thought I'd adapt such a process based upon my experiences this weekend and offer you a lovely process here today within our theme of relationship development.

Simply follow these Steps For Metaphorically Enhancing Your Relationship:

Step One: Induce hypnosis. Use whatever method you know. Alternatively, get deeply relaxed or mindful and develop a receptive mindset. Then move on to step two.

Step Two: Imagine yourself in a place in nature. Maybe a woodland area, a beach or a park of some kind. Become aware of the colours around you, the weather, the sounds of life. Breathe the clean fresh air and enjoy the temperature that is just right for you.

Walk through this area and tell yourself that each step you take takes you deeper inside your mind.

As you walk, imagine that you are walking a dog, notice how it walks, what breed it is, notice it stopping and sniffing and how you cannot always predict its movements. Watch the dog walking within a comfortable distance with you, let yourself drift deeper inside your mind and when you really have this and are tuned into the scene in your mind, move on to the next step.

Step Three: As you walk, start to reflect and think about your relationship in your life, take a few moments to think about it, assess it, think about the role you play within your relationship.

Once you have spent enough time to get a sense of your own relationship while you continue to walk in nature with the dog, then move on to the next step.

Step Four: Watch as you notice at your feet a stick. The stick looks perfect to throw for your dog and for you to both engage in some harmonious fun together.

Notice the colour of the stick, it's size and details.

As you bend down and pick the stick up, feel the weight of it, the texture of it and see that the dog's attention is caught and it starts to look at you with it's ears pricked up.

Have a really good think now - what do you say? What do you do? How do you encourage the dog and help it become interested in the stick? Right now, in your mind, do whatever you can, to get the dog involved, engaged and even excited about playing with the stick with you.

You may find that it requires a number of different approaches until the dog truly engages, reach deep inside yourself and use as many different ways as possible to engage the dog and really communicate your intentions well.

When you have done this, perhaps you have noticed that dogs tail is wagging and it is really ready, then move on to the next step.

Step Five: Now throw the stick. Become aware of how you thrown it, where you threw it.

Watch as the dog refuses to go and fetch it. The dog sits there.

Did you throw it far enough, or too far? Did you throw it in the right direction? How does the dog react?

Right now, work out what is the best way to throw the stick, perhaps you need to run after it to show your dog what to do, or perhaps the dog requires you to fetch it together for the first time.

Go and fetch the stick yourself and notice how the dog reacts, what it does in response. Get it engaged with you again using your strategy from the previous step and when you have engaged your dog again, throw the stick in a different way, having thought and considered it... And watch as your dog bounds happily away and after the stick, tail wagging, mouth open, eyes bright and alert.

Each step the dog takes as it picks up the stick and brings it back to you, takes you deeper inside your mind and you then move on to the next step.

Step Six: Watch as your dog brings the stick back. It holds it out to you and as you lean to get it, notice if it lets go easily, or if it wants to wrestle the stick, or if it is reluctant to let go.

Think about what you say to the dog to have it let go of the stick easily and smoothly, notice your tonality and what your intentions need to be in order for the dog to respond.

Adjust your communication accordingly and play with the dog while it comfortably lets go of the stick so that you can throw it again.

Continue to throw the stick as many times as is optimum for you both to connect, enjoy it together and bond. Notice what tells you that your dog wants to carry on playing and notice what tells you that your dog is nearing the stage where you can stop playing this game.

When you sense the time is right to stop throwing the stick for now, bring it to an agreeable end. Pet your dog, stroke it, embrace it, and give it some love that shows undeniably that you enjoyed this and that you feel closer to your dog as a result of this time that you shared.

Step Seven: As you carry on walking comfortably through this place in nature, start to think of your own relationship and ways you can enhance it, ways you can bring more harmony, fun and enjoyment to the relationship in a way that strengthens it.

Once you have spent enough time thinking about that, plan on taking some action that is going to truly aid your relationship and enhance it in some way and then move on to the final step.

Step Eight: Now take a couple of nice deep, energizing breaths, wiggle your fingers and toes and open your eyes.

Go and take that action and enhance your relationship.

Thank you for your inspiration Mick, and although this article is a little tongue-in-cheek in places, I think you'll love running this process and I wish you the best with it.

Playwright, screenwriter William Hanley dies at 80

(AP) ? William Hanley, a Broadway playwright and award-winning screenwriter who scripted a pioneering TV film that dealt with incest, has died. He was 80.

His daughter, Katherine Hover, said he died Friday at his home in Ridgefield, Conn.

Hanley's works include "Slow Dance on the Killing Ground" and "Mrs. Dally Has a Lover" and the teleplays "The Long Way Home" and "The Kennedys of Massachusetts."

He won Emmys for the TV movies "The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank" and "Something About Amelia."

"Amelia," which first aired in 1984 on ABC, explored the largely taboo topic of parental sexual abuse. Ted Danson, then the star of hit sitcom "Cheers," portrayed a doting, well-to-do father exposed as having had sexual relations with his teenage daughter. Glenn Close played the mother in the critically acclaimed, top-rated program, which also won Emmys for outstanding drama special and for young Roxanne Zal, who played the abused daughter.

In addition, Hanley wrote the screenplay for the 1969 film, "The Gypsy Moths," as well as several novels.

Hanley is also survived by another daughter, Nell Hanley; a sister, Patricia Hanley; and three granddaughters.

Insert Coin: Modkit Micro asks us if we're ready for six-year-olds coding Arduino boards

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you'd like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with "Insert Coin" as the subject line.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/29/insert-coin-modkit-micro-graphical-programming/

What does microcontroller programming have in common with Tetris? Quite a bit if you're doing it with Modkit Micro from a Kickstarter project out of Cambridge, MA., which allows almost anyone to visually set up their hardware using graphical blocks to write the code. The partially-hooded trio behind it promises that the software is ideal for use with prototyping boards from Arduino, Evil Mad Science, Lilypad, Seeed Studio, Wiring and SparkFun, and they even claim that elementary school students have used it to "take their projects from concept to reality in just a few hours." Purists should have no fear either: you can still get into a code view to see what's going on behind the scenes. A web-based Modkit Micro is being offered online starting June 1st for $25, and there'll be a desktop variant for Windows, OSX, and Linux as early as July if they reach their funding target. Check out the video after the break and then try to get your kids to wait for college before inventing version 2.0 of this.

Africa's external, tax revenues triple to $152.2b in 2011 ? AfDB ...

You Are Here: Home ? Africa/International, Lead Story ? Africa?s external, tax revenues triple to $152.2b in 2011 ? AfDB

Page last updated at Monday, May 28, 2012 15:15 PM //

Africa?s external finances recovered to pre-crisis levels with foreign investment, official development assistance and remittances estimated at $152.2 billion in 2011, according to the African Development Bank (AfDB).

According to a report released today, May 28, 2012 as the AfDB begins its annual general meeting in Arusha, Tanzania, ?external and tax revenue resources available for development in Africa have trebled over the past decade and have never been so high.?

The African Economic Outlook 2012, co-written by the AfDB, the OECD Development Centre, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the UN Development Programme, says ?as a share of Africa?s gross domestic product, external flows doubled from 6.8% in 2000 to 12.3% in 2006, but were still down at an estimated 8.2% in 2011.?

It says foreign direct investment (FDI) and official development assistance (ODA) remain the key sources of finance, but urged African governments and their partners to increasingly look at remittances and tax revenues.

The appetite of emerging economies for natural resources and a boom in international commodity prices underpinned an increase in resource investment in Africa, it said, adding that sustained growth of over 5% and improved macroeconomic indicators ?lower inflation, sustainable debt levels? attracted international and, increasingly, national investors.

The report noted that foreign investment remains the largest external financial flow to Africa and has great potential for stimulating long-term growth and employment, while acknowledging that the increase in investment in recent decades did not produce more inclusive growth or sufficient jobs as most of the finance went on the hunt for resources.

?Africa needs to attract more productive FDI to diversify its economy and benefit from technology transfers and spill over effects,? it recommended.

The report said ODA increased in 2011, but at a slower pace than previous years, indicating that the sovereign debt crisis and austerity measures in OECD countries dampened prospects for a significant increase in future assistance.

?This particularly threatens the functioning of the state for nearly half of African countries where ODA is still the largest external finance,? it said.

Remittances to Africa peaked in 2011 and are projected to continue to increase strongly in 2012, the report said. It indicated that the importance of remittances varies across countries and regions.

?They play a significant role in smoothing consumption and hence contribute to poverty reduction and improving social conditions. Additionally, they can provide capital to small and microenterprises, aiding job creation,? the report said.

It said collected taxes in Africa increased from an unweighted average of 18.1% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2000 to 19.9% in 2009.
However, it noted, this increase was mainly driven by resource-related taxes in oil-exporting countries as oil prices surged after 2007.

It called on African countries to improve the quality of their tax systems by deepening their tax bases.

?Tax revenues complement external financial flows by helping states to provide quality public services and pursue economic policies that are conducive to raising growth and attracting finances from abroad,? the report said.

Apple Launches Revised iOS 5.1.1 Build for GSM iPhone 4

Apple updated iOS to version 5.1.1 earlier this month and only added minor features to it, but it?s only now that the update comes to the GSM iPhone 4. The Next Web is reporting that iPhone hacker iH8sn0w posted details about the update on his Twitter account.

The new version of the build is 9B208 and not 9B206 as expected, used in the previous version. We?re not sure that the update brings, other than the usual connectivity and performance upgrades, although it?s interesting to see this release now, just hours after Absinthe brought untethered jailbreaking to iOS 5.1.1 devices, including the new iPad. The GSM iPhone 4 users have already upgrade to 5.1.1, but the problem is that this update is not vulnerable to the untethered jailbreak offered by pod2g.

If you still want the update, you can get it via OTA or iTunes. I?m sure that pod2g and co will find a way to also make the untethered jailbreak work with the iPhone 4 GSM with iOS 5.1.1 new update, but that may take some more days?

Halladay's sore shoulder not new

After leaving Sunday?s game after two innings due to a sore shoulder, Roy Halladay said the pain dates back to Tuesday?s outing, a loss to the Nationals.

Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee, however, admitted it went back further than that.

?Yeah, it?s been an issue,? Dubee said. ?It?s been there. It?s been lingering. Some days it?s better than others. Chicago [May 17] was better than others. Even the start of last game it was better and then got it cranky. Today, warming up, he felt fine, but as he got into the game and sat down and even before the first inning, it was just hard to get it going again.?

Jim Salisburg of CSNPhilly.com has the full rundown, including some Roy Oswalt speculation, and it?s well worth checking out. For sure, it seems doubtful that Halladay will make his next start, and a 15-day DL stint would seem to be in the cards even if Halladay is likely to fight it.

Tropical Storm Beryl was close to making landfall in the southeastern U.S. late Sunday, as coastal areas were already starting to feel the impact of drenching rains and driving winds.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami reported late Sunday that Beryl was 35 miles east of Jacksonville, Fla., and 75 miles (121 kilometers) south-southeast of Brunswick, Ga. Forecasters said the storm was moving west at 7 mph (11 kph) and that its center should cross the coast over the next few hours.

Beryl had maximum sustained winds of 70 mph (113 kph) ? close to hurricane-strength ? with higher gusts. One park near Jacksonville Beach, Fla., was reporting winds of 53 mph (85 kph).

Forecasters said the system should begin to weaken over the next day or so, as it moves inland and becomes a tropical depression.

Tropical storm warnings were in effect for the entire Georgia coastline, as well as parts of Florida and South Carolina.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott urged Florida residents in the affected areas to "stay alert and aware."

"Tropical Storm Beryl is expected to bring heavy rain and winds, and it is vital to continue to monitor local news reports and listen to the advice of local emergency management officials," Scott said in a statement early Sunday evening.

Beryl was expected to bring 4 to 8 inches of rain to parts, with some areas getting as much as 12 inches. Forecasters predict the storm surge and tide will cause significant coastal flooding in northeastern Florida, Georgia and southern South Carolina.

The weather system could complicate holiday traffic on Monday, and it wrecked some Memorial Day weekend plans on Sunday, causing shoreline campers to pack up and head inland and leading to the cancellation of some events.

Campers at Cumberland Island, Ga., which is reachable only by boat, were told to leave by 4:45 p.m. Sunday. The island has a number of undeveloped beaches and forests popular with campers.

However, many people seemed determined to make the best of the soggy forecast.

At Greyfield Inn, a 19th-century mansion and the only private inn on Cumberland Island, the rooms were nearly full Sunday and everyone was planning to stay put through the wet weather, said Dawn Drake, who answered the phone at the inn's office on the Florida coast.

In Jacksonville, Fla., Sunday's jazz festival and Memorial Day ceremony were canceled. Workers were also out clearing tree limbs and debris that could be tossed about by the storm's winds. Winds had already knocked down tree limbs and power lines in parts of coastal Georgia, leaving hundreds without electricity.

But business was booming at the Red Dog Surf Shop in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where customers flocked to buy boards and wax in anticipation of the storm's high waves. Officials along the coast warned of rip currents, waves and high tides ? all of which can be dangerous but also tend to attract adventurous surfers. The waters had already become dangerous in South Carolina, where rescuers were searching for a missing swimmer.

The Coast Guard said three people and a dog were rescued from a sinking recreational vehicle by crews in Charleston Harbor late Sunday morning.

"There were wave heights of roughly four feet, the waves started depositing water in the boat and the boat started to get overwhelmed, it started to sink," Petty Officer Christopher Evanson, a Coast Guard spokesman, told the Associated Press. "The Coast Guard was able to get on scene, get alongside the boat and disembark the passengers.

Evanson said the Guard is "trying to convince boaters and swimmers alike to stay away from the water. It's very dangerous right now and we're trying to stay vigilant and we're out there trying to ensure that everybody is safe.

In Jacksonville Beach, Fernando Sola said business was booming at his Happy Faces Ice Cream truck. A bus- full of tourists from South Carolina had stopped to buy some ice cream and watch the storm waters churn.

"There are actually more people than on a normal day. It's working out great," said Sola, taking a few moments away from scooping ice cream to people lined up in front of his truck.

Steady, heavy winds kicked up sand across the area, forcing onlookers to shield themselves with towels.

Jessica Smith and Chester Jaheeb decided to brave the waters despite many warnings for people to stay out. Jaheeb, who was born in India but lives in Jacksonville, said he had never experienced a tropical storm before.

"We were at a certain part that started pulling us out, like the rip current, so we decided to come to shore," said Smith, 17.

Taylor Anderson, captain of Jacksonville Beach's American Red Cross Volunteer Lifesaving Corps., said his lifeguards went body-surfing early Sunday to get acclimated with the surf conditions for what looked to be a long day. They also reviewed methods to determine where there might be riptides.

"They look for discoloration, the water moving paradoxically back to sea, and our lifeguards are trained to spot that, to keep people away from that, especially when the surf is this high. It makes those run-outs very dangerous. People can get sucked into those very fast, especially with the high surf and the high wind," he said.

Though the weather was calm earlier Sunday, Anderson's lifeguards began preparing other equipment in the morning. They packed sandbags in front of the entrances to the oceanfront Red Cross lifeguard station and pulled lifeguard stands off the beach.

As the winds picked up, officials hung two red flags, one warning of dangerous ocean conditions and the other notifying beachgoers that swimming was prohibited. But a lot of people ignored the warnings. By 3:30 p.m., Anderson said, lifeguards had made 150 "preventions," meaning lifeguards ordered 150 people out of the water, though no rescues were necessary.

One of the people ordered out the water was Christian Siciliano, 14, of Jacksonville Beach. The surfer said the waves were too rough for surfing so he, his brother and a friend decided to go boogey-boarding.

"We just went out to, like, mess around," Christian said. "It was really rough. I didn't make it out too far, about 10 feet."

He said the waves were so powerful it was difficult to paddle against them. Then lifeguards raced to the area and ordered him and the two other youths from the water.

Bars and restaurants along Jacksonville Beach's oceanside roads were enjoying booming business, with outside decks crowded with people listening to music, drinking and watching the weather. At Joe's Crab Shack, which has a deck facing the Atlantic Ocean, the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive" blasted from outside speakers.

Joe Murphy, a spokesman for the Ritz Carlton in Amelia Island, Fla., said he was not seeing a flood of checkouts or people trying to get off the island. Outdoor dining had been moved inside and the hotel set up movies and family game activities, but the hotel had no plans to board up or move patio furniture inside.

The southeastern U.S. wasn't the only part of the country dealing with troublesome weather.

In Washington, the annual Memorial Day concert on the National Mall Sunday night was cut short as a line of thunderstorms approached the District of Columbia from the northwest. Mike Musher of the National Weather Service said the thunderstorms developed over Pennsylvania as part of the weather system that created record high temperatures in the Midwest over the weekend.

Once Beryl comes ashore, it is expected to continue dumping rain over parts of Florida and Georgia on Monday before heading north and then out to sea. It was expected to weaken to a tropical depression by Monday night.

On Tybee Island, a barrier island not far from Savannah, water off the beaches was closed for swimming Sunday. Tybee Island fire Chief C.L. Sasser said winds of up to 42 mph were creating "horrendous water currents." Only people with flotation devices strapped or tethered to their bodies were being allowed into the water, and they were being cautioned not to venture in farther than knee deep.

"Even if you're standing in waist-deep water, the current can sweep you out quickly," he said.

His ocean rescue team pulled a total of 48 people from the water on Saturday, he said, including about 27 that were considered to be in life-threatening conditions. One man who was sucked under the water was rescued by friends and onlookers and was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

A band of showers soaked the beaches late Sunday morning, causing crowds to thin, Sasser said. With alternating rainy and sunny weather forecast throughout the day, he said he expected the crowds on the sands to ebb and flow.

In South Carolina, Janice Keith with the Myrtle Beach Area Convention and Visitors Bureau said Sunday that the office hadn't fielded any calls from concerned tourists.

In Beaufort County, emergency management deputy director David Zeoli said officials were continuing to monitor the storm and encourage people to have a plan in case conditions get worse.

Zeoli said winds had kicked up in the area that includes Hilton Head Island, a popular golf and beach destination. "It's just a wet day here," he said.

Techmeme?s Gabe Rivera Opens Up About New Vs. Old Media

Screen shot 2012-05-25 at 12.22.24 PMTo any member of the tech media, Techmeme is the first site you visit in the morning, and the last site you check before bed. It's a thermometer of today's news, with more context per headline than any single news source can offer. This is the beauty of aggregation, which some more traditional media outlets frown upon. But founder and CEO Gabe Rivera has been doing this since 2004, and has incredible insight into the differences between old media and the young guns. I grabbed him backstage during Disrupt NYC 2012 after his panel on the tech media to see how he felt about new media's dependance on sources like The New York Times, the myth of objectivity, the difference between click bait and link bait (if there is one), and his personal source preference when he sits down with a cup of coffee to read the day's news.

Can the US Military Afford More Biofuels?

Ed. note: This piece first appeared on Energy Outlook, Geoffrey Styles? blog.

Last week the US House of Representatives passed the fiscal 2013 National Defense Authorization Act by a wide, bi-partisan margin. It included two controversial provisions relating to energy that will presumably be debated when the Senate Armed Services Committee takes up the bill this week. Sections 313 and 314 would exempt the Department of Defense from a provision of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA) barring the government from purchasing alternative fuels with higher emissions than conventional fossil fuels, while prohibiting the purchase of any alternative fuel that costs more than the conventional fuel it would replace, except for testing and certification purposes. If enacted, the bill would require drastic revisions to the current alternative energy strategies of the US military branches.

It would be easier to attribute these provisions to partisan maneuvering, if our economic and fiscal circumstances hadn't changed so dramatically subsequent to the passage of EISA in 2007. Although I don't dismiss the influence of election-year politics in such matters, we are now in the third full year of a recovery so weak that many Americans still think we're in a recession, and we face deficits and a ticking debt bomb that forced a reluctant Congress to agree to deep spending cuts starting next January. Nearly $500 billion of those cuts are targeted at military spending. Moreover, our perspective on US energy security has been altered by the emergence of shale gas and so-called "tight oil", and by our recent shift from net importer to net exporter of petroleum products--though certainly not of crude oil. While it remains desirable for the US military to diversify its energy sources, the value of that diversification has arguably fallen. Meanwhile, the biofuels industry, despite tremendous growth and advances, has been unable thus far to compete with petroleum-based fuels without either large subsidies or strict mandates, even with a global price of oil that has remained consistently above $100 per barrel since January 2011.

Last year I had a couple of opportunities to question Defense Department officials about their alternative energy strategies, as part of an Army/Air Force energy forum and a subsequent Air Force media briefing at the Pentagon. Although I was impressed by the changing military culture concerning energy and the methodical way they were approaching the introduction of new fuels, I was concerned that at some point the services' procurement of higher-cost renewable fuels would conflict with their other priorities, including the need to replace equipment worn out in Iraq and Afghanistan and to field the next generation of aircraft and naval vessels. What I thought I heard very clearly from the Air Force Deputy Assistant Secretary for energy was that his service was not going into the fuel-production business, and would only buy renewable fuels--other than for certification with their fleet--if they were competitive with conventional fuels. That approach seems very different than the one embodied in the Navy's "Great Green Fleet" initiative.

The rationale behind the military's adoption of alternative fuels rests on many complex issues, including the vulnerability of military supply chains and budgets to potential disruptions in oil supplies and price spikes, consistency with the government's imposition of renewable energy mandates on the private sector, and the desirability of reducing the environmental footprint of the military's global activities. There's also the human dimension of personnel put at risk delivering fuel to front-line units, although it's not clear how biofuels would alleviate that risk unless they were produced in forward locations. In any case, however, all these concerns must be reconciled with a realistic response to budget constraints. That looks extremely challenging, and it shouldn't be divorced from deeper questions about the evolving drivers for biofuels or other alternative fuels for the US military.

Consider the question of supply disruptions, for example. US oil production looks set to continue increasing and oil imports to keep falling, while we now enjoy a refining surplus that is supporting new product exports. We also have a Strategic Petroleum Reserve that could replace up to half of our net crude oil imports for up to 5 months, or a smaller disruption for much longer. As a result of these factors, it's become more difficult to envision a scenario in which an oil market event affected the military's access to fuels in a manner that the present renewable energy industry could alleviate. And with the cost of most alternatives still above even today's elevated prices for oil and its products, the investment required to develop an alternative fuel industry capable of making a meaningful dent in the military's needs under such a scenario would be very substantial. Should the military make that investment, should someone else, or should it be left to the market? And that doesn't begin to address the issues related to the non-renewable alternative fuels that would be enabled by Section 313, including synthetic fuels derived from natural gas or coal, though these would still be subject to the restriction that they must be price-competitive with conventional fuels.

I suspect that the House bill will not be the last word on this subject, though I also imagine that in the new world of "sequestered" budgets and the fiscal challenges that lie ahead, the US military may need to rethink what can be achieved in this area without sacrificing readiness and combat capabilities. It's also important to note that the 2013 Defense Authorization Act's provisions on alternative fuels shouldn't affect the services' efforts to integrate renewable electricity generation, which looks like a real boon for some forward-deployed applications.
